Option for the Poor and for the Earth
First published in 1983 as Option for the Poor, Fr Dorr offers a masterful review of Catholic Social Teaching going back to Pope Leo XIII’s 1891 encyclical Reum Novarum.
The latest edition was published in 2012 with the revised title – Option for the Poor and for the Earth. This edition includes five new chapters on the equality and complementarity of women; a critical examination of two encyclicals from Pope Benedict – Deus Caritas Est and Caritas in Veritate – and the issue of ecology as it has been treated in Vatican documents for over half a century.
Fr Donal Dorr is a member of the St Patrick’s Missionary Society (Kiltegan Fathers), he has served as a consultor to the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and as a resource person for the Irish Missionary Union. He is the author of ten books, including the award-winning Spirituality and Justice (1985).
