Science has made the most amazing and wonderful discoveries about the natural world over the past 400 years, crowned by our modern understanding of the physical basis of life. This lecture will describe how scientific consideration of the world raises certain questions that, going beyond science, are significant for our philosophical understanding of the meaning and purpose of the world.

William Reville is Emeritus Professor of Biochemistry and Public Awareness of Science Officer at University College Cork. He is Science Columnist with The Irish Times and Chairman of the Board of the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland.
He wrote Science Today: Understanding the Natural World (Irish Times Books, 1999).
